Josef Schelb (18941977) is one of the better-kept secrets of German music. His output was substantial: he lost most of his early music in a bombing raid in 1942 but, as if to make up for lost time, wrote some 150 more works after that, in the tonally liberated, quasi-Expressionist contrapuntal tradition of Hindemith and Hartmann; Bartk was an important influence, too. The three pieces recorded here show Schelb capable of astonishing vitality in his mid- to late seventies: they display lean muscularity, freewheeling energy and luminous and transparent orchestration, often informed by bucolic nostalgia and lyrical melancholy.
Lawson Rollins – Airwaves: The Greatest Hits (2018)
Guitar, Instrumental, Latin Jazz, Fusion | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 01:05:45 | 151 MB
Label: Infinita Records
Airwaves: The Greatest Hits chronicles a decade’s worth of radio hits from Lawson Rollins’ seven solo albums, including the Billboard Top 30 contemporary jazz radio charting songs Island Time, Moonlight Samba, Infinita, Flight, and Daybreak. Two new bonus tracks were recorded exclusively for this album: the contemporary jazz future hit World of Wonder (featuring the Billboard #1 jazz fusion group 3rd Force) and the classically-inspired, world-music composition Prado (featuring 2-time Grammy Award winning Danish violinist Mads Tolling).
Airwaves showcases the melodic, tuneful side of Rollins’ music that has set radio airwaves afire since his 2008 debut solo album Infinita. Although Rollins is noted for his fleet-fingered flights of virtuosity, showcased in his viral video hits, such as The Fire Cadenza, that have received over 10 million views on YouTube alone, his radio hits find him purely in the service of the melodies and song craft.
Many of the radio edits are markedly different from the album versions and feature performances not heard on the albums and never before made available, such as In Motion (radio edit) which showcases an exclusive appearance by Billboard #1 saxophonist Praful. All the tracks have been freshly remastered at world-renowned Sterling Sound in New York.

The single brings out a Country infused southern rock spirit that has drawn Country fans to Kid Rock for almost two decades since he released the CMA, ACM nominated Picture. Both Picture and his massive summer anthem All Summer Long continue to be fan favorites at Country Radio. A five time Grammy nominee with over 26 million albums sold to date, Kid Rock has consistently blazed his own trail. His career intersected early with Country audiences and created a connection that has continued to grow each year. He has been twice nominated for CMA Awards, Picture with Sheryl Crow (2003) and Can’t You See with Zac Brown Band (2010). This October 6th and 7th he will host Kid Rock’s Third Annual Fish Fry in Nashville, yet another sign of his close ties to Nashville and Country Music. Since the spontaneous release of his two most recent tracks in July, Po-Dunk and Greatest Show On Earth and their accompanying videos, Kid Rock has been at the center of media coverage speculation as to his musical and personal ambitions. While others speculate, the artist known for his slew of American anthems and his explosive live shows has been busy touring and preparing for an epic series of concerts opening Detroit’s new Little Caesars Arena. Not only is he the maiden act for the venue, he recently announced that the venue will play host to his own Made in Detroit restaurant to open on the Woodward Avenue side of Little Caesars Arena. Expect a nationwide tour to be announced soon.

Songs of a Sojourner is an album consisting of World Premiere recordings of new works for Trumpet. Jorge Bolet, Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Lawrence Foster, Edo de Waart – Liszt: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2, Tre Sonetti del Petrarca & Tannhuser Overture (Jorge Bolet: The RIAS recordings, Vol. II) (2018)
Classical | WEB FLAC (tracks) & d. booklet | 318 MB
Label: audite Musikproduktion | Tracks: 14 | Time: 79:17 min
Jorge Bolet – the last gentleman of the piano: Cuban-American pianist Jorge Bolet (1914-1990), misleadingly labeled the last Romantic among 20th century pianists and marketed under this title when he achieved world fame at the end of his career, was first and foremost a gentleman of the piano. Few pianists interpreted the great piano music of the 19th and early 20thcenturies with such unerring stylistic assurance and technical mastery that was at the same time completely free of vanity and striving for effect. Rather than vague sentimentality, Bolet – who studied at the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with David Saperton, son-in-law of the legendary pianist Leopold Godowsky, and later succeeded Rudolf Serkin as director of ist piano department – sought a balance between musical and pianistic intelligence. Thanks to these qualities, his recordings, which include not-uncontroversial transcriptions from the golden age of piano playing before 1914, are considered benchmarks. These recordings for the RIAS Berlin from 1962-73, featuring works by Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy alongwith highly virtuosic encores and arrangements by Moritz Moszkowski and Godowsky (among others), are no exception: here we experience a pianist and musician who rightly occupies aplace among the pantheon of great pianists.
All the recordings are first releases from the master tapes.
Appearing soon, the follow-up CD broadens the selection to include concerto repertoire (concert recordings of Liszt’s piano concertos with the RSO Berlin under Lawrence Foster / Edo de Waart); it also presents further great piano works by the composer (Tannhuser Paraphrase, Annes de plerinage. Deuxime anne. Italie). The stereo recordings were made in 1971 and 1982 and offer testimony of the late Jorge Bolet.
This Audite set is invaluable, because it brings out for the first time on CD, recordings Bolet made in Berlin for German radio from the 1960s onwards. There is real treasure trove here, and no pianophile should miss this set. (Classic FM)
John Eliot Gardiner – Purcell: King Arthur (2018)
Classical, Opera, Vocal | WEB FLAC (tracks) & front cover | 392 MB
Label: Erato | Tracks: 39 | Time: 91:16 min
With its lavish music and elaborate staging, the semi-opera King Arthur is one of the masterpieces in Purcell’s works. On a text by the poet John Dryden very freely inspired from Arthurian legend and specifically devised for him, Purcell created a work of great expressive intensity which includes among his most beautiful and well-known arias.
Jeff Baker – Phrases (2018)
Vocal Jazz | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 01:14:54 | 175 MB
Label: OA2 Records
After a seven-year absence, vocalist/composer/arranger/educator and foremost fan of the Boise State Broncos, Jeff Baker has returned to the studio to add to his already impressive discography, which includes: Baker Sings Chet; Monologue; Shopping for Your Heart; Of Things Not Seen. The distance between the earthy, basic Of Things Not Seen and the present airy and ethereal Phrases is a vast one. Baker increases his instrumentation dramatically, from a quintet on the former to a septet, adding an additional four as a string quartet for several selections. He also pulls all the stops on his composing, having written the majority of the 11 selections included. Foremost of the original compositions are those based on the writings of Pablo Neruda (Neruda), JD Salinger (Salinger), and Salvador Plascencia (People of Paper). Baker’s melodies are lofty and light and his voice, solid with a rich hint of androgyny, meld well with the lyrics garnered.
Ballad of the Sad Young Men is nearly perfect in its adaptation to the surrounding material. Pianist Darrell Grant does an admirable job keeping this recording’s light-as-air approach aloft and moving forward. It is a recognition of Baker’s talent that he attracts bassist Clark Sommers and alto saxophonist Steve Wilson into his creative fray. Baker arrived years ago. It is now time for us to pay attention.
Ilmo Ranta, Jan Sderblom & Hedvig Paulig – Erkki: Songs to Swedish Texts (2018)
Classical, Vocal | WEB FLAC (tracks) & d. booklet | 203 MB
Label: Toccata Classics | Tracks: 22 | Time: 53:15 min
The Finnish composer Erkki Melartin (18751937) wrote around 250 art-songs, often grouping settings of different languages and different dates into unrelated and sometimes untitled opus numbers. But what might be a nightmare for the musicologist is a treasure trove for the enthusiast for Nordic song, as this recital of some of the best of Melartins Swedish settings will prove, with music that often sounds rather like Sibelius tinged with French Impressionism.

Country, Folk, Bluegrass | Label: Hillbilly Goats
Old Jack’s Bones is our 4th studio album capturing our passion and telling the tale of Old Time String-band Music and Appalachian Folk. This isolated music evolved up in the Blue Ridge Mountains as waves of settlers seeking their own land came down the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania into SW Virginia between 1730 & 1830. These Scotch-Irish and Germans met with English and African families that were heading west from the older coastal Tidewater settlements making the Blue Ridge the first American Frontier. This saw a blending of culture, rhythms and religion creating a new American sound with fiddle, banjo, dulcimer, ballads and tunes.
After touring these immigrant songs and stories to you over the last 7 years, we recently spent 5 weeks in the Blue Ridge Mountains rifling through museums, archives, venues, towns and universities for inspiration and confirmation that the tales we tell are true. And we’re glad to report that YES, 99.9% of our gathered knowledge is fact. It’s evident our passion and thirst for seeking out the history and reviving these old timey songs is gaining momentum as we release this to you, our latest album, Old Jack’s Bones.
