Pathways for Peace ~ Inclusive Approaches to Preventing Violent Conflict

Pathways for Peace: Inclusive Approaches to Preventing Violent Conflict

Pathways for Peace: Inclusive Approaches to Preventing Violent Conflict by United Nations
English | May 31, 2018 | ISBN: 1464811628 | 80 Pages | PDF | 4 MB
The resurgence of violent conflict in recent years has caused immense human suffering, at enormous social and economic cost. Violent conflicts today have become complex and protracted, involving more non-state groups and regional and international actors, often linked to global challenges from climate change to transnational organized crime. It is increasingly recognized as an obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
This has given impetus for policy makers at all levels from local to global to focus on preventing violent conflict more effectively. Grounded in a shared commitment to this agenda, Pathways for Peace: Inclusive Approaches to Preventing Violent Conflict is a joint United Nations and World Bank study that looks at how development processes can better interact with diplomacy and mediation, security, and other tools to prevent conflict from becoming violent. To understand what works, it reviews the experience of different countries and institutions to highlight elements that have contributed to peace.
Central to these efforts is the need to address grievances around exclusion from access to power, opportunity, and security. States hold the primary responsibility for prevention, but to be effective, civil society, the private sector, regional and international organizations must be involved. Enhancing the meaningful participation of women and youth in decision making, as well as long-term policies to address the aspirations of women and young people, are fundamental to sustaining peace.
The Pathways for Peace: Inclusive Approaches to Preventing Violent Conflict – Main Messages and Emerging Policy Directions report previews findings from the full study, which will be published in 2018.

Passing Judgment ~ Praise and Blame in Everyday Life [Audiobook]

Passing Judgment: Praise and Blame in Everyday Life [Audiobook]

Passing Judgment: Praise and Blame in Everyday Life [Audiobook] by Terri Apter
English | January 9th, 2018 | ASIN: B078HWCYCN, ISBN: 168168912X | MP3@64 kbps | 8 hrs 17 mins | 228.01 MBNarrator: Ann Marie Lee
Our obsession with praise and blame begins soon after birth. Totally dependent on others, rapidly we learn to value praise and to fear the consequences of blame. Despite outgrowing an infant’s dependence, we continue to monitor others’ judgments of us – and develop what relational psychologist Terri Apter calls a judgment meter, which constantly scans people and our interactions with them, registering a positive or negative opinion.
Apter reveals how interactions between parents and children, within couples, and among friends and colleagues are permeated with praise and blame that range far beyond specific compliments and accusations. Drawing on three decades of research, Apter gives us tools to learn about our personal needs, goals, and values; to manage our biases; to tolerate others’ views; and to make sense of our most powerful, and often confusing, responses to ourselves and to others.

Oral Pathology in the Pediatric Patient ~ A Clinical Guide to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mucosal…

Oral Pathology in the Pediatric Patient: A Clinical Guide to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mucosal Lesions

Elizabeth Philipone, Angela J. Yoon, Oral Pathology in the Pediatric Patient: A Clinical Guide to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mucosal Lesions
English | 2016 | ISBN-10: 331944638X | 148 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
This book is a practical, user-friendly guide to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of the oral mucosal lesions most frequently encountered in pediatric patients. For each entity, a characteristic clinical photograph is provided, the clinical appearance is concisely described, and guidance is offered on differential diagnosis and treatment options. Oral indications of systemic diseases are addressed in a separate section, and mucosal indicators of drug use, sexual abuse, and eating disorders are also identified.
Oral lesions are a relatively common occurrence in the pediatric population. Fortunately, most of these lesions are transient and can be diagnosed clinically; examples include aphthous ulcers, traumatic ulcers, and lesions of infectious etiology such as viral lesions and candidiasis. There are also a number of mucosal lesions, such as mucoceles and viral papillomas, that require biopsy for diagnosis and/or surgical excision for treatment. This book will assist the practitioner in diagnosing and treating both transient and persistent mucosal lesions.

With the advent of powerful machines, we are getting more processing power to work with. Using this technology, we can seamlessly integrate our computer vision applications into the cloud. This book will walk you through all the building blocks needed to build amazing computer vision applications with ease.
We start off by applying geometric transformations to images. We then discuss affine and projective transformations and see how we can use them to apply cool geometric effects to photos. We will then cover techniques used for object recognition, 3D reconstruction, stereo imaging, and other computer vision applications. The book also covers popular OpenCV libraries with the help of examples. You will also learn about camera calibration and how to apply machine learning with artificial neural networks.
The book is a practical tutorial that covers various examples at different levels, teaching you about the different functions of OpenCV and their actual implementation. By the end of this book, you will have acquired the skills to use OpenCV and Python to develop real-world computer vision applications.
