This book overlaps geographically and culturally with Peter Mathiessen’s THE SNOW LEOPARD. Both cover a journey to Dolpo from Kathmandu and both feature the same terrain, villages, monasteries and sub cultures. They are two very different books although both are great books-but in very different ways. Snellgrove writes as an anthropologist and admirer of the people and their religion. He exhaustively describes the people, the rituals and the art in the very visual temples and monasteries. He does so with great zest and respect. I enjoyed all of the book and appreciated the way his journey wrapped up-it ends in a poignant way.
