Linley Hamilton – Making Other Arrangements (2018)

Jazz | Label: Contemplate 360
This album has been in the making for at least four years since this Northern Irelander’s last release, In Transition in 2014, but for Linley Hamilton it seems as though this collection of arrangements has been developing for much longer. Inspired by Freddie Hubbard’s large ensemble on Ride Like the Wind, his new album is a concoction of tunes that have been arranged for woodwinds, strings and a rhythm section with Hamilton’s melodic trumpet line at the forefront.
Cian Boylan, whose arrangements have fulfilled Hamilton’s dream, begin on Here’s to Life. The lyrics are left out only to be replaced by the emotionally charged trumpet line, weaving seamlessly with the strings.
Track two nods its head to Hubbard as inspiration with Brigitte. Its classic ’80s backbeat’s still there but with a bit of a modern twist and a brilliant solo that connects all the dots from inception to completion.
The sheer variety of music on this album has something for everyone; as we navigate past bebop tradition through a James Taylor staple Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight (with a wicked bass groove) and into Earth, Wind and Fire’s classic After the Love Has Gone with a beautiful string treatment that makes it almost unrecognisable. Again, Hamilton’s solo has an ethereal quality that conveys the vocal line perfectly.
It’s obvious that Hamilton is attracted to a good beat, and including some of his trumpet heroes’ songs is no surprise. Dizzy’s tune Con Alma has a similar Latin feel as Brigitte did with solos from the leader and both sax players Brendan Doyle and Ben Castle weaving through. Continuing on is a rousing rendition of Joan Capetown Flower by Abdullah Ibrahim, with an almost take me to church feel, the rhythm section in full sync here as they shift onto another Latin inspiration: Ivan Lins’ Love Dance.
On Louisiana Sunday Afternoon, Hamilton is joined by American singer Dana Masters. The two are good friends and the trumpeter has stepped back to let Dana shine it momentarily feels like her stage until his solo, where he is beautifully featured over top of a bed of strings the whole collaboration is showcased so exquisitely.
Another fabulous bass line from Dave Redmond allows for a growly, sensual rendition of Michel Legrand’s What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life before we are brought home to the warmest, most sincere ending to this fabulous project. Carmel wraps up the whole album, as though walking down a summer street with three scoops of ice-cream in hand. Again, the whole ensemble builds in, one step at a time, enveloping Hamilton’s trumpet in a happy mood comparable to a cheery Beatles tune.
Hamilton’s vision combined with Boylan’s arrangements match each style with an exciting new take and just the right amount of nostalgia for the songs we know so well. What an amazing tapestry of music to showcase this trumpet maestro. It was a pure pleasure to listen to.
Kela Parker – The Dreamer and the Dream (2018)
Folk, Indie Folk | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 01:03:32 | 146 MB
Label: Kela Parker
Earthy, raw, and evocative, the genre-bending sound of Kela Parker channels the roots of folk music, but like folk music from a country you’ve never heard of before. Like her unusual chord progressions, the singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist followed a winding, serpentine path to arrive at her distinct sound. Growing up in a family of classical and folk players, as a young musician she gravitated equally to Joni Mitchell’s alternate guitar tunings as to the dramatic piano ballads of Rachmaninoff and Chopin.
Drawing from a well that reaches deep into the musical past and into her own emotional journey, her hidden harmonics and oral
narrations pulse with the dissonance of artistry amidst modern world industry. Pivoting between the ultimate individualism and the shared universal rhythm, Parker creates an accidental kind of jazz, one’s personal improvisation of the world’s collective folk step. She is equally rootsy and ethereal, spontaneous and composed.
The Dreamer & The Dream is a collection of 14 original songs written by Kela Parker from 2013-2016, and recorded between 2016-2017 in various studios, churches, and apartments where she traveled between in Portland, Oregon and Brooklyn, New York. It is a record about migration and disorientation to the city changing around you, with the increasingly volatile disruptions and shifts of the natural world’s ecological balance as its backdrop. From within the tumult, a fresh harmony emerges, a new-fangled account of being an evolving self in a changing place. Speaking to and through the authentic human instrument, Kela Parker soundtracking rhythms of a post-genre new world.

The album also showcases the two new tracks Aint No Fool and Looking Out from the bands upcoming studio album, set for release autumn 2018. GBG Sessions (The Gothenburg Session) shows a band that is getting closer and closer to its peak and leaves you longing for the band to return to both the studio and the roads… GBG Sessions is a special album as it both shows a live experienced band at the same time as it features the bands new singer Linus Johansson for the first time. Gothenburg Session holds eight tracks and was recorded by Tom Larsson at Kungsten Studios. The entire album is recorded live. Hypnos are from Gothenburg, Sweden and can best be described as Heavy Rock where they cheery picked the best out of the 70s hard rock and 80s heavy metal scenes. New singer Linus Johansson is no stranger to rock music, his powerful vocals can be heard in Trial who is releasing records through Metal Blade. Hypnos have previously released Cold Wind 2016 and their self titled debut in 2015. Both albums on Crusher Records.

Jazz | Label: Neuklang (in-Akustik)
Universal Citizen is dedicated to an openminded approach, spanning beyond cultures, religions, nationalities, countries and habits. It is a call for the reunification of human civilization; a celebration of the universal thread binding us all. I chose the title Universal Citizen for the album and for one of the compositions of this album, to describe the importance of being beyond a nationality, a religion or a community. This aspect of being open-minded and universal is a key for living in our world today. We are of course all different, with many many different habits, knowledge, opinions, but we are all looking to the same goal; life and happiness. Around this common goal, there is no geographic boarders that can separate people, we all want the same. I wrote the music of this album in this sense and I feel extremely thrilled about releasing it, because it expresses my need to unify people through music, my passion.

The new album features Mauricio Zottarelli on drums with bass duties split between Mike Pope and Petros Klampanis. In his own words, Rafalides stated The songs in this album are near and dear to me, representing my induction to the world of American music, the world of jazz. The vibraphone trio has a unique sound, not as widely heard as piano or guitar trios. In this recording I am presenting arrangements of some classic compositions from the Great American Songbook along with two original tunes. The process of doing so has been challenging, yet very rewarding and this is the result of a harmonious partnership with these exceptional musicians. Our artistic paths crossed in New York, the jazz capital, and it was here that we got our sound together.

Amos Milburn – Let’s Have A Party: 1946-1961 Aladdin, Ace & King Sides (Remastered) (2018)
Blues, R&B, Rock & Roll | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 01:17:15 | 194 MB
Label: Hoo Doo Records
A crucial figure in the transformation of swing and jump blues into R&B and rock & roll, the legendary pianist and singer Amos Milburn pounded out some of the most hellacious boogies of the postwar era. He specialized in good-natured upbeat romps about booze and its effects (both positive and negative) that proved massive hits during the immediate pre-rock era. Such great artists as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Dr. John have all cited Amos as a seminal influence on their work. This essential release compiles 29 of the finest songs Amos Milburn issued for different labels like Aladdin, Ace, and King, between 1946 and 1961. Highlights include joyous R&B, soulful blues, and seminal rock & roll tunes, such as Chicken Shack Boogie, Lets Have a Party, Bad, Bad Whiskey, Rocky Mountain, and One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer, among many others. Also featured here are lesser-known rockin numbers that are just as enjoyable as the classics. Among the material included in this edition are the 12 tracks that constituted Milburns complete 1957 LP Lets Have a Party (originally released on Score, a subsidiary of Aladdin). A celebrated album among R&B and blues aficionados of that era, it contained a magnificent selection of Amos previous recordings for the label.
